26th March 2012: Press Release
UK plc needs 450,000 skilled technicians by 2020, employers review reveals.
Employers and skills champions meet today to announce plans to tackle huge shortage of skilled technicians in the UK.
An 18 month review has revealed an alarming skills gap between the number of technicians in the UK and the 450,000 higher skilled jobs that will be needed by 2020 to boost growth in the economy and ensure the UK maintains a competitive edge internationally.
As part of that review, the Technician Council has today, 26 March, launched a set of recommendations to employers, Sectors Skills Councils and professional bodies that will help fill that gap.

Steve's Speech
Today is an important day……not only to make sure that we highlight home-grown technical skills in the UK….but to make a step change for our businesses… our economy…and for individuals.
Our competitors around the world have already recognized the value of technical skills, and are becoming leaders in technology and innovation.
If we are to keep pace internationally and stimulate growth in our economy, we need to do the same.
